Frequently Asked Questions

Will my credit card number change?

Yes, your new MasterCard credit card will have a new card number. If you have any automatic payments currently connected to your City & County Credit Union credit card, you will need to update your payment information.

Will my limit change?

Your credit limit is evaluated on an annual basis, and it is not being evaluated during our upgrade to MasterCard. We will always let you know if your credit limit changes.

Will my current card work once I receive my new MasterCard credit card?

Your current card will work for a short time after you receive your new card. For your security, your current card will deactivate days after you receive your new card. Once your new card arrives, please activate it immediately and begin using it for purchases. To activate your new card, call 1 800 631-3197.

Are balance transfers still free?

Yes! It is still free to transfer your balance to City & County Credit Union from other financial institutions. Transferring a balance to our low-rate cards is a beneficial choice for many of our members. Call or visit for details.

Do I need to update my automatic credit card payment?

If you currently use a CCCU account to automatically pay your credit card bill, you will not have to update your payment. Your information will automatically update and your credit card will continue to be paid automatically from your CCCU account.

If you use a non-CCCU account to automatically pay your credit card bill, you will need to update your automatic payment with your new credit card number and expiration date.

I see a VISA and MasterCard credit card in my online banking account. Why?

During the transition period of switching from VISA to MasterCard, two credit cards may appear in your online banking account. Don’t fret! That’s normal. When your new MasterCard credit card is created, it will show up in your online banking account. After a short time, your VISA will automatically be deactivated and disappear from your online banking account. If you would like to make a payment while both of your cards appear in Online Banking, you can make a payment to either card since the payment will automatically transfer to your new MasterCard credit card. Once you receive your MasterCard, activate it immediately by calling 1 800 631-3197 and begin using it for all purchases. Please shred your VISA credit card for your personal security. If you do not have access to a shredder, bring it to any one of our branches and we will happily shred it for you!

Will my credit card PIN change?

No, your credit card PIN will not change. You will be able to use your current PIN with your new MasterCard credit card at ATMs.

Will I still receive 1% cash back on my new Platinum Rewards Credit Card?

If you currently have a CCCU Visa® Platinum Rewards Credit Card, you will automatically receive a CCCU MasterCard® Platinum Rewards Credit Card. Any rewards you’ve accumulated this year will automatically transfer to your new card.

How do I set up Identity TheftAlerts™?

Cardholders can enroll at no cost by visiting http://www.mastercard.us/idtheftprotection. See Guide to Benefits for complete details.

What is an EMV chip card?

A chip card, or an EMV card, is a regular debit or credit card that is enabled with a microchip. The microchip holds the information that is currently in the magnetic stripe in your card. When used at a chip-enabled terminal, the microchip makes your transactions more secure as the microchip sends a one-time code to the terminal to complete the transaction.

Where can I use my chip card?

You can use your chip card at any merchant. More and more merchants in the U.S. are adopting chip-enabled terminals. These terminals are equipped with chip card readers and magnetic stripe readers. If you are at a merchant without a chip-enabled point-of-sale terminal, you can use your magnetic stripe to complete the transaction. Chip technology is now used throughout the world, making world travel easier and more secure.

What makes chip cards more secure?

When the chip card is inserted into a terminal, a unique code is created and transmitted to the terminal to complete the transaction. Since a new code is generated for each transaction, it makes it more difficult for fraudsters to duplicate your account information and can decrease the risk of fraud on your account.

How do I use my chip card?

If you are using your card at a chip-enabled terminal:

     1. Insert card, chip first, facing up, into the terminal.
     2. Follow the prompts to sign, confirm payment, etc.
     3. Remove your card once the purchase is complete.

Remember, your card still has a magnetic stripe on the back and can be used at a traditional terminal.

Will I still need a PIN for my chip card?
Your credit card still has a PIN associated with it since there are circumstances when you will need to know your PIN, such as when you use your credit card at an ATM. Your PIN will not change.
